The Third Edition of the First Podcasting Conference in Egypt and Africa
CAIRO, EGYPT – PodFest Cairo, Egypt and Africa’s first podcasting conference took place on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at The American University in Cairo’s (AUC) Tahrir Cultural Campus (TCC). The event was hosted by AUC’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JRMC).
The half day conference was designed to cultivate Egypt’s podcasting community. This year’s face-to-face featured three panels: How to Start a Podcast, Sounds Good? Voice and Audio Quality in Podcasts and The Future of Podcasting in Egypt. The panels were held in English and Arabic with simultaneous translation. Panelists included Pakinam Amer, an Emmy-winning journalist, science writer, podcaster and experimental storyteller as well as long time podcaster Hazem Mahani from the I Wanna Rock Podcast. The event moderator was Rawan Lasheen from the Egyptian Parliament and Al Ghad TV.
The panelists shared their experiences as podcasters including one marketing tip from Ahmed Naguib from the Ma3 Naguib Podcast who encourages guests to use their social media to help promote the podcast episodes that they appear on. Kim Fox, the conference founder and organizer was impressed with the turnout especially since the previous PodFest Cairo was virtual, “It was ideal to have the event in AUC’s historic Ewart Hall where we could be face-to-face, but in a spacious venue. It was really nice to see people and have vibrant discussions on podcasting.”
The PodFest Cairo team also revealed preliminary results from the inaugural PodFest Cairo Listener Survey. The most popular genres are entertainment, educational and inspirational; the most popular format is interviewing followed by narrative nonfiction; and most respondents listen to podcasts a few times a week. The PodFest Cairo Listener Survey is available in English and Arabic and the surveys will remain open until Thursday, March 31, 2022:
